“I never had a feeling about playing Doctor Who, I never imagined Doctor Who could be played by a young man in those days and I loved Bill’s performance. I think it had something. I enjoyed the other Doctor Who’s but I always think he’s got a mischievous magic about him. He made him sort of a shifty magician and because he played comedy and farce a lot in his early career, he was always looking for opportunities for jokes. We had a very good time, a lot of laughs. He’ll always be Doctor Who for me.”
-William Russell when asked whether he felt he was the leading man of Doctor Who, and how he felt about William Hartnell as the Doctor.
