John Leeson on Voicing K-9 With Tom Baker

John Leeson would do the Times crossword puzzle from his headset with Tom Baker during down time on set. He thought they were just keeping busy between takes. Since he was voicing from far off, he didn’t realize there were a ton of locals watching the filming! But for all of the fans watching, it appeared as though The Doctor was completing the daily crossword with K-9.

I think I’d be slightly more concerned than the Doctor if K9 had said that to me

Okay, not to suddenly become the Fan Theorist type of Doctor Who fan, but I have a legitimate question:

Seeing the various doctors next to each other gives you a far better idea of their unique heights and builds than just a list of their heights.  According to the Law of Conservation of Mass, matter cannot be created or destroyed, just changed. Considering there’s an explanation for everything in the Doctor Who universe, I would just like to know:

Does the Doctor always have the same amount of matter? Is it simply converted into different aspects? (Denser bones? More/less hair?) Or is extra matter expelled post-regeneration?  (I mean, look at Tom Baker vs. Sylvester McCoy. I know they weren’t back-to-back, but comparatively speaking, Sylvester is like a little shih tzu I could carry in my purse forever and ever.)

And if that was the case, how would larger doctors suddenly gain more matter for additional height/mass/etc.?

Am I overthinking things, or has this been previously discussed?

Four was my first.

I only see my extended family about once or twice a year. Tonight at Thanksgiving, my mom bragged how she was going to the Doctor Who convention (Chicago TARDIS) and both of my uncles, my mom’s older brother AND younger brother, totally watched Doctor Who back in the day!

Her older brother didn’t know which doctor was who, so I pulled up a Google image of all of them. He really likes 11 and how conscious he is of the human race, but growing up, Tom Baker was his Doctor.

My younger uncle also watched Doctor Who, and showing him the picture of all 12 doctors, he also recognized Tom Baker as his Doctor. I explained that the guy after him, the 5th Doctor, was my favorite classic Doctor, but he said he only saw a few episodes with Peter Davison.

Since 4 was his Doctor, I asked him if he remembered Sarah Jane. Initially he didn’t, but once I described her, he totally did! So we gushed over Sarah Jane for a second and talked about how sad it was that Elisabeth Sladen died of cancer so young, just like his cousin.

I never really related to or connected to my uncles at all, and because of Doctor Who, I felt like I connected with them. Especially when my favorite uncle, mom’s younger brother, bragged about how he had a long Tom Baker scarf except in our high school colors.

I couldn’t believe it, that both of my uncles, my mom’s older AND younger brothers, watched Classic Who, and yet my mom knew absolutely NOTHING about it until I told her!

Doctor Who brings families together.
